Steamed Chinese Momos Recipe – Soft Dumplings Stuffed with Spicy Veg or Chicken Filling

Chinese momos, the beloved street food now popular across India, are soft dumplings filled with deliciously spiced vegetables or minced meat. Steamed to perfection and often served with a fiery red chutney, momos make for a perfect snack, appetizer, or even a light meal. Their chewy texture and rich filling have made them a favorite among foodies of all ages.

 Ingredients You’ll Need:

For the Dough:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour (maida)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Water (as needed)
  • 1 tsp oil (optional)

For Veg Filling:

  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • ½ cup grated carrots
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onions
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp oil

For Chicken Filling (alternative):

  • 1 cup minced chicken
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp oil

👩‍🍳 How to Make Chinese Momos at Home:

🔸 Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Slowly add water and knead into a soft, non-sticky dough. Cover and rest it for 20–30 minutes.

🔸 Step 2: Prepare the Filling

Heat oil in a pan. Add onions and ginger-garlic paste, sauté till soft. Add veggies or minced chicken. Stir-fry for 3–5 minutes. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Let it cool completely.

🔸 Step 3: Shape the Momos

Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each into a thin circle. Place 1 spoonful of filling in the center, then fold and pinch the edges to seal into a dumpling shape (half-moon or pleated round).

🔸 Step 4: Steam the Momos

Place momos in a steamer (or idli stand). Steam for 10–12 minutes or until the outer skin turns shiny and soft.

🌶️ Serving Suggestions:

Serve hot momos with spicy red chili garlic chutney, soy sauce, or mayonnaise. You can also pan-fry or deep-fry them for a crispy texture.
